The particular problem in designing the appearance of this organ was the presence of a round steel support column in the center of the choir and organ area. Proposals from several other organ builders simply ignored this and would have located a case in the center where it would always be partly blocked by the pole and would compete visually with the figure of Christ. I decided instead to center my composition on the statue, dividing the design into two cases and borrowing the parabolic curved pipe shades from my earlier case design for the Rosales organ at St. Anthony's R.C. in Upland, California. A new, shallow organ chamber was added behind the wall so the organ would not reduce the choir space. The tonal design is the latest in a series inspired by my opus 8. |
